Millennium crowned as the new KCL Champions

The Millennium defeated the Tokyo Wombats to be crowned as the new champions of Japan Cricket. In a low scoring match at Fuji, the Wombats famed trio failed to make an impression and scored only 127 runs. That presented a massive opportunity for the Millennium, a predominantly Japanese team, and they grabbed it with both hands. The Millennium coasted home in the 35th over with 3 wickets to spare. This sets two milestones for Japan cricket. One, this is the first time ever in the history of KCL the Tokyo Giants gave away their firm grip on Japan's premier cricket contest which they held for three consecutive years and two, a pre-dominantly Japanese team winning the year-long championship.

Japan wins EAP Cricket Cup in Vanuatu

A few months after becoming an Associate member of the ICC, Japan justified its promotion by winning the six-nation East Asia-Pacific Cricket Cup held in Vanuatu in September. This is Japan's first ever title victory in an international tournament. Japan defeated the Cook Islands by a slender margin of 6 runs in a low scoring match. Batting first, Japan scored 161 runs with wicket-keeper and upcoming star Tetsuro Chino scoring a solid 51 off 120 balls. In reply, the Cook Islands were bowled out for 155 with Japan's debutant Patrick Giles-Jones claiming 3/31.

JCA announces the final 14 players to tour Vanuatu in Sept. for the EAP Cricket Cup

The JCA Selection Panel today selected the final 14 players for EAP Cricket Cup in Vanuatu coming up at the end of September, 2005. 4 new batsmen will make their debut for Japan in this tour, with Yoshiyuki Hirose (Wyverns CC), Ko Irie (British Embassy CC), Masaomi Kobayashi (Max CC) and Sriram Sampath (Indian Engineers CC) all new to the team. The Selection Panel noted that a strengthening in the batting department was necessary from last year's EAP Cricket Challenge in Fuji, when the team struggled to go past 200 until the final match. The Selectors are very confident that the new players all bring different styles of batting to the team, and their selections are based on consistent run scoring efforts in the Kanto Cricket League and the selection trials held over the past 2 months. These players have been added to the returning batsmen of Junior Takahashi (Fuji Far East CC) Tetsuo Fuji (Millennium CC), Jummei Hanada (Wyverns CC) and Munir Ahmed (Millennium CC), which makes for a powerful line-up. More information is available here.

Umpiring Seminar held on June 4

As has been the practice in recent years the Kanto Cricket League committee organized a KCL umpiring seminar and actively encouraged all teams to send representatives so as to further improve the level of umpiring in the KCL competition as well as in cricket in general. Twelve teams were represented by 18 participants. The KCL committee defined a few points to be discussed at the seminar:

These points were integrated into the seminar along with issues identified through feedback from the Japan Umpires Improvement Program that has been running this season. Issues from the feedback that were dealt with in the seminar were:

A heavy emphasis was placed on the huge importance of "Preparation" whether it be pre-match day communication with captains, game day greetings and bond building, pre-toss discussions with captains or just getting your own personal things prepared – uniform, equipment, transport and supplies.
